Welcome to the latest edition of the San Diego Participant Observer Newsletter!

In this edition, our Recipe of the Month is for Andhra Style Green Chili Chicken. Spicy-hot and absolutely delicious, this dish from southeastern India is sure to wow your taste buds (in a most delightful way).

Our Book of the Month selection is Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez. The Washington Post describes the book as a "smart romantic comedy that lures us in with laughter and keeps us hooked with a fantastically engaging story."

Our International Music for the Month suggestion is Temperamento by the Spanish folk band, Vigüela. They are known for melismatic melodies – in which several notes are sung to one syllable. The band also features guitar, lute, mandolin, manchego guitar and the rebec (a medieval fiddle).

A bit of a light week on the events front, but there are some gems!

Tonight (Friday) the 3-day 15th Annual Indian Music and Dance Festival kicks off at the JCC. Lots and lots of Indian traditional music (vocal and instrumental) and dance to enjoy. The Mexican pop band Reik will perform at the Civic Theatre. And An Iliad continues at the North Coast Rep.

Saturday and Sunday Exclusive Collections Gallery Solana Beach will host a Native American Art Show.

Saturday, Child Rights and You America will once again host a Holi Festival at Westview Park. Border Stories at the Torrey Pines High School will feature dances choreographed by Mexican-American, Mexican and Chicano choreographers. They will have shows at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM. At the Central Library, there will be a discussion of the book The Tale of Kiều which is considered to be the epic national poem of Vietnam.

Sunday, the 8th Annual Mariachi Festival will be held at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. At Mission Trails Regional Park, you can take part in a Native American Flute Circle. A Benefit Concert for Ukraine will take place at the Encore Event Center. Mingle at the Mingei will present a concert by Camarada they are calling Mosaics due to the eclectic nature of the night's program.

On Wednesday, the Village Theater in Coronado will screen the classic black and white film The Dragon Painter starring Sessue Hayakawa. Much of the film was shot at the Coronado Japanese Tea Garden which graced the island from 1894 to the late 1930s.

Next Thursday, the Timken Museum will host an online discussion on The Conquest of Reality - Early Netherlandish Painting. Warwick's will host Eliza Knight as she discusses her new book, The Mayfair Bookshop. Mira Costa College will host an evening of Music from Spain and Latin America featuring works from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, and Spain.

Next Friday, the Beatles vs. Stones battle of the tribute bands returns to the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.

Next Saturday, the Eredő Hungarian Folk Band will perform at the International Cottages and will feature Hungarian folk and American bluegrass tunes.
